Netflix & Zack Snyder’s Panned Action Sci-Fi Epic Finally Gets Long-Awaited Sequel Update

>

Over the last few years, divisive director Zack Snyder has turned his hand to crafting his own Star Wars-esque sci-fi action saga with Rebel Moon. Released on Netflix, the first Rebel MoonRebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, was followed up with Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, but, while Snyder has revealed plans for multiple installments, no updates regarding Rebel Moon 3 have emerged. Until now…

Coming via What’s on Netflix, Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad revealed that Zack Snyder still has big (possibly too big?) plans for the saga, with the Man of Steel and Watchmen director having planned out up to six sequels.

“We outlined movies 3, 4, 5, and 6… very detailed outlines, and Zack has literally plotted out the whole world. We know where we can go… we’ve written… detailed outlines.”

And it’s these epic plans that could prove a problem (as well as declining viewership and scathing reviews), with Johnstad himself wondering how exactly Snyder plans to bring is vision for Rebel Moon 3 to life.

“The scope and scale of the middle of the movie and certainly the final… I have no idea how [Zack] can actually film this, because it was so… the scale was so massive.”

Will Netflix Pull the Trigger on ‘Rebel Moon 3’?

While we await any kind of official announcement from Netflix regarding the future of the Rebel Moon franchise, Johnstad went on to tease what Rebel Moon 3 will be about, whilst also revealing that he has no idea what the streamer is waiting for…

“The second movie was to find the princess. And the third movie is to make sure that the princess is where she should be — sitting on the throne and properly ruling… over the Mother World.

I don’t know… those decisions are way above me — like how those things are made and where the money is going to come from.”

Directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, Rebel Moon boasts an all-star ensemble cast that includes Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Bae Doona, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. Based on a story conceived by Snyder (reportedly stemming from his rejected Star Wars pitch), Rebel Moon introduces audiences to an epic sci-fi universe ruled over by the imperialistic Motherworld, with Sofia Boutella leading as Kora, a former soldier who rallies warriors from across the galaxy to fight their oppressors.

In an effort to replicate the success found by The Snyder Cut, the Rebel Moon movies were designed to have director’s cuts before the originals were even released. As is now the norm when it comes to Snyder, both Rebel Moon movies proved to be hugely divisive, with the respective director’s cuts being much more favorably received by both critics and audiences alike. However, among critics especially, Rebel Moon failed to impress, and even struggled with audiences, as viewership for Rebel Moon: Part Two saw 46.2 million viewers tune in during its first three weeks, compared to its predecessor’s 73 million views. Time will tell whether Netflix thinks there’s enough potential for more.
